Your Body is Good

Per usual, my Target run got a little out of hand. My three girls and I had checked off what was on our list and we swung by the clothing section. I had a hot date with my husband that night and thought I might snag a new tee. Quickly one tee turned into a skirt, two dresses, a body suit and a swimsuit. (It was on sale!)

My clothing picks became a window of opportunity for my girls. Carter ran to go find a crop top (bless my heart, she’s 7) and Collins went to her section to find some leggings. (Collins is Sporty Spice, Carter is definitely Posh. If you know you know.) And before we knew it Connolly hand-delivered an Elsa dress to our shopping cart.

We had some trying on to do.

We all piled into the dressing room and I started trying on, loving some items and disliking others. Immediately, I felt sad about the way my arms looked. How could they still not be toned? Hadn’t I worked hard enough? And why did that swimsuit bottom make me look bigger?

Quickly my mind spiraled.

As I peeled off clothes, I watched my girls look at their bodies in the mirror. I watched Collins turn to the side, looking how her leggings fit, wondering if her legs were too long. I watched Carter try on her orange tank top and tug on it a bit, looking to me if it fit okay.

And then Connolly….she tried on her Elsa dress and started dancing.

I had an opportunity in that moment to celebrate my body, as Connolly reminded me, or beat myself up about how my body doesn’t measure up to the world’s unreasonable expectations.

Know what I did? CELEBRATED THE HECK OUT OF EACH OF OUR BODIES. I complimented Collins’ long legs. I cheered for Carter’s cute body. I laughed at Connolly dancing. And I told my girls how I like my arms because I am getting stronger every time I fulfill a commitment to myself and move my body.

I spoke loud and clear: Our bodies are good. God is a good designer. And we can celebrate how we are created.

So friend, let me say it again for you:

Your body is good.

God is a good designer.

And you can celebrate how you have been created.
